Caroline E. Hastings was elected to the Boston School Committee in February of 1889. She was a physician and had been a professor of anatomy at the Boston University School of Medicine. She was also a member of the Protestant Independent Voters Association, a group dedicated to keeping Catholic backed candidates out of office.
