Annie R. Hannon was elected County Superintendent of Schools for Sangamon County, Illinois in 1892. She was not the first woman to campaign for office in the county, but Hannon was the first to be elected. Hannon was an assistant to her father, Noel B. Hannon, elected County Superintendent in 1890. When her father died unexpectedly, Annie completed his term, and won election on her own in 1892. She was the Democratic party candidate, having beat her opponent in party caucuses by one vote. Hannon went on to beat her Republican candidate as well. She lost the party nomination in the 1894 elections. Not until 1956 would Sangamon County elect another woman to office.
