Flora Dunlap served on the Des Moine, Iowa School Board. She was the first woman in Iowa to be elected to a school board. Dunlap declined to run for re-election to the school board she believed the men were not ready for women members. None of the other school board members (all male), had spoken to her and one man called the women who attended the school board meetings, "old hens."
