Edna Dow Cheney was nominated by the Republican Party in Ward 17 for a seat on the Boston School Committee in 1874. She was not elected. Cheney is best remembered for editing the letters of Louisa May Alcott. She was also an early officer of the Massachusetts Woman Suffrage Society and the New England Woman's Club. Cheney was deeply involved in expanding higher educational opportunities for women, especially in Boston. Cheney also wrote on religious subjects, especially liberal ones.
