In 1869 Julia C. Addington was elected Mitchell County Superintendent of Schools in Iowa. Addington was among the first women in the nation to be elected to a county-wide political office. Women in Maine, Ohio, and Massachusetts had been elected in the previous decade, including Olive Rose of Maine, to a county wide office in 1853.
