Dr. Mary Frye Barry was elected to the House of Representatives in Colorado in 1898. Barry, a physician practicing in Pueblo, was instrumental in passage of legislation in the 1899 session for comprehensive education mandated for children between eight- and 14-years-old; kindergarten classes included in public schools; creation of county high schools; creation of a library commission; adoption of the columbine as the official state flower; a law protecting sewing machines, bicycles and other articles of the poor from seizure; a mechanic's lien law; and protection for the rights of laborer
