Nelle Barrett was elected County Register of Deeds for Montgomery County, Kansas in 1914. She was re-elected for a second term in 1916. At the end of her service as County Register in 1918, Barrett sued the Board of Commissioners of Montgomery County because they had denied her the payment of certain fees usually due to the County Register. The case went before the Kansas Supreme Court and in 1921 the justices ruled in favor of Barrett.
