M. Helen Wooster was elected County Superintendent of Schools in Kossuth County, Iowa in 1871. She was first appointed to the office, but campaigned in the next election cycle. Wooster was elected by "a handsome majority." She was the first woman elected in Kossuth County. Wooster later moved to Calinfornia.
