From collection Candidates
Alice S. Nichols [or Nicholls], the Republican candidate, was elected as the County Superintendent of Schools in Meagher County, Montana in 1882. She ran for a second term two years later, but lost to the Alice M. D'Arcy, the Democrat in the race. Later that year Nichols married and became Alice S. Nicols Barnes. In 1888 she was elected as a School Trustee. As Alice Nichols she had served as an officer of the state Woman's Christian Temperance Union, and had been one of the first women in the state to be an officer of the National Education Association.
