Carrie Church Oostdyk was "warmly recommended by many citizens" as a Republican candidate for the Detroit, Michigan Board of Education in 1917. Oostdyk believed in fair salaries for teachers and close supervision of the schools, finances, and buildings by the Board. Oostdyk was a prominent suffragist in Detroit and a leader of the Equal Suffrage League of Wayne County.
