Edith N. Oakes was elected Town Superintendent of Schools for Sangerville, Piscataquis County, Maine in 1886. Oakes served as the treasurer for the Piscataquis County Woman's Christian Temperance Union and worked on the state and national levels as well. She worked with other women's organizations.
