In 1901 Lavinia Sterrett was elected Hodgeman County, Kansas superintendent of schools. She was re-elected several times, serving until at least 1904. In early Kansas government reports she is referred to as Mrs. Sterrett but in later lists of official positions her name appears without the "Mrs."
