Estelle Lawton Lindsey, who identified herself as a socialist-feminist ran for office twice in California. In 1914 Lindsey was a candidate the State Assembly from the 61st District. She was nominated by the Socialist Party and endorsed by the Central Labor Committee, and a non partisan group of club women. Lindsey did not win that race. The following year, in 1915, running as an independent, Lindsey won a seat on the Los Angeles City Council. Lindsey saw the election of women to office as a natural extension of woman suffrage, and that there "should be women in the legislature to represent the sex". She was re-elected in 1917.
