In 1896 Ella Terpening, the Peoples party candidate, was elected to be the Columbia County, Washington Superintendent of Schools. She successfully ran for re-election two years later. She later moved to Oregon. In 1918, Terpening ran in the primaries and general election for the Oregon House of Representatives as a Democrat and lost in the general election.
