Mary Sykes served four-year terms from 1894 to 1902 as the elected Warren County, Illinois superintendent of schools. She was corresponding secretary of the local Ladies Republican League, and a proponent of free kindergartens. She married Loren R. Sykes October 22, 1874. They had three daughters. She was a member and officer of P.E.O.
