Maria Weston Chapman received votes in the 1839 election for governor of Massachusetts. Chapman was a well-known and very active abolitionist and peace activist. In the late 1830s Chapman was a "non-resistant," believing that she should not cooperate with a government that tolerated slavery and violence. Non-resistants did not believe in voting or running for elective office, so it is unlikely that Chapman sought out the Massachusetts governorship or campaigned in any way for the office.
