Schell ran as a Non-Partisan in the school board election, making her one of several candidates opposed to the Socialist block on the board. At the time that she ran, there were four socialists on the board and five additional candidates. The total number of seats on the board was fifteen. The Milwaukee Journal endorsed her candidacy in the belief that she would help Americanization in schools. Ida Schell was college educated.
