Emily Sartain
Emily Sartain was elected to the Twenty-ninth School Committee of Philadelphia in 1888. Sartain was elected for a second term, but resigned in 1891. Sartain was a well-known and well-regarded painter, artist, teacher, and writer. In 1886 she became the director of the Philadelphia School of Design for Women, the largest art school for women in the United States. Sartain was known for her support of women's rights and, with her sister-in-law Hattie Judd Sartain, was one of the founders of the New Century Club.
