Zula Thurman was elected as School Commissioner for Lincoln County, Missouri in 1907. She was re-elected in 1909 and qualified as County Superintendent in that year. Thurman graduated from Buchanan College and attended the University of Missouri for advanced training. She then taught for twelve years in rural and urban schools in the state.
