Elizabeth Brainerd was elected as Commissioner of Schools for Grundy County, Missouri in 1907. The following year Missouri established the office of County Superintendent and Brainerd entered that office. She was elected to additional terms in 1911 and 1915. Before her election Brainerd had taught in rural and urban schools in the state.
