From collection Candidates
Nathalie B. Ells was a Socialist party candidate for Presidential Elector in Baltimore, Maryland in 1916. The state attorney general ruled that Ells' name could appear on ballots in the general election as she had been properly nominated by the Socialist party, and a judge had ruled in 1909 in the case of Ada Smith Lang, that women were allowed to be candidates. The Maryland state constitution did not require candidates to be electors in the state.
