In 1914 Elizabeth Merrill Bass was a Democratic party candidate for County Commissioner in Cook County, Illinois. While Bass did not win a seat, she became a significant activist in the national Democratic party soon after. Bass served as president of the Chicago Women's Club and was an active supporter of suffrage.
