Martha E. Shoemaker, the Republican candidate, was elected County Superintendent of Schools in Yellowstone County, Montana in 1894. She ran for re-election two years later, but lost to the Democratic and Populist candidate, Gwen F. Burla. Before her election Shoemaker served as a high school principal.
