Gertrude Weil Klein ran for the New York State Assembly as the Socialist candidate from Kings County Brooklyn in 1918. She lost this race but remained politically active in New York area. In 1941 Klein, the American Labor Party candidate from the Bronx, was one of the first women to win a seat on the New York City Council. She won re-election two years later, but lost a third, independent bid in 1945. She died in 1986 at the age of 93.
