Maria M. Sheetz was nominated to the city council of Canon, Colorado by the Populist party in 1894. She served on the Canon school board as well. She was the first president of the Friends in Council, one of the oldest women's organizations in Canon. Sheetz was also one of the vice presidents of the Territorial Woman's Suffrage Society organized in Denver in 1876.
