Hilda A. Engdahl, the Democrat, was elected as County Superintendent of Schools for Yakima County, Washington in 1888. She won her race by only five votes. Two years later Engdahl ran for re-election, but lost to the Repubican candidate. Engdahl married in office and in 1890 ran as Engdahl-Meystre.
