Mary Gilliam was the Democratic candidate for County Superintendent of Walla Walla County, Washington in 1898. She received almost thirty-five percent of the vote, and lost to the Republican incumbent. Gilliam was elected to the office in 1916 and served for at least one term. Gilliam was a teacher in area schools and received her B.A. degree from Whitman College. Her sister, Ellen Gilliam was elected as County Superintendent in 1886.
