Maude Kimball Butler was elected as the County Superintendent of Schools for Wahkiakum County, Washington in 1902. She was elected to a second term two years later. During her second term in office Butler became pregnant, but refused to resign her position as requested. Before her election Butler was a pioneering educator and school teacher. She spent a year at the Oregon State Normal School. Butler's daughter, Julia Butler (later Hansen) was the first woman to be elected to the Cathlemet Town Council in 1937. The following year Hansen was elected to the Washington state legislature, where she served for twenty-one years. In 1960 Hansen was elected to the U.S. Congress, from Washington state. Maude Butler supported her daughter's political career, helping with domestic chores.
