Clara A. McCarty, a Republican, was elected as County Superintendent of Schools for Pierce County, Washington in 1880. She served for one term. McCarty was the first graduate of the University of Washington, and received her diploma in 1876. Before her election McCarty taught school in Pierce County. She married while in office.
