Layfeate Ellen Bush (also known as Mrs. A. S. Bush), a Republican. was elected as County Superintendent of Schools for Pacific County, Washington in 1880. Two years later, Bush ran as the Democratic candidate, but lost to the Republican, Jennie Griswold, by eight votes. Before her election Bush was known for her strong anti-suffrage stance.
