Julia Newkirk, a Democrat, was elected as County Superintendent of Schools for Columbia County, Washington in 1882. She served for one term. While in office Newkirk supported raising the salaries of superintendents, instituting better training for teachers, new textbooks, and compulsory school attendence for children.
