Mary R. Layton, the Republican candidate, was elected as County Superintendent of Schools for Silver Bow County, Montana in 1886. She ran for re-election two years later was won her race. Layton ran for a third time in 1889, but was defeated by her Democratic rival, Carrie Cox.
