Months prior to the ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment, Dr. Esther Lovejoy of Portland, Oregon announced that she would be a candidate for the U. S. House of Representatives. She did not win. Lovejoy was the first woman's health officer in Portland's history. She graduated from the University of Oregon Medical School in 1894. She successfully worked to secure a clean milk supply for the city and other improvements in sanitation. During World War I she served overseas with the American Women's Hospitals. In Oregon she was a suffrage activist.
