In 1914, Mrs. Mary Kennedy, was the first woman candidate for mayor in Illinois. Although a Democrat in national politics, she campaigned on the Citizens' ticket in her town of Mount Carroll. At the time of her campaign, Mrs. Kennedy was 55 years old. Kennedy was married with two children at the time of her campaign.
