Florence Bean was elected County Superintendent of Schools for Teton County, Montana in 1896. While in office Bean became involved in county racial politics over whether or not Native American children located in the district should be counted in the school census. The local newspaper rebuked Bean for her actions, claiming that she didn't know the requirements of the office. The State Superintendent supported Bean. After two years in office Bean married, and served out her one term.
