Chapman, Hattie D.

Hattie D. Chapman was an independent candidate for Alameda, California School Director in 1901. She was supported in her campaign by women of the local Political Equality Club. The women helped her candidacy by canvasing house to house and speaking to women.  As California women did not have school suffrage and could not vote, the canvasing hoped the women would persuade their male family members to vote for Chapman. Chapman believed that a woman should serve on the School Board, as women were closer to children. She was an active club woman and a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Chapman would later serve on the board of trustees for the city library.
