Donahue, Nellie Gertrude
In 1914 Nellie Donahue was one the first women in California to run for Secretary of State.  She was a Democratic party candidate, but lost in the primary to a moderate Republican who cross filed to win the primary spot for both major parties. Despite losing the race Donahue continued to work within the Democratic party and was appointed to several positions including national committeewoman and postmaster in the 1930s.
