Catherine Hitchcock Tilden Avery
Catherine H. T. Avery, a Republican, was the first woman elected to the Cleveland, Ohio School Board, in 1895. Avery organized the Western Reserve chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and served as a national officer.  For twelve years she edited the DAR American Monthly magazine.  Avery was active in press circles and women's clubs in Cleveland.
