Emma C. Sonneman was elected as a School Trustee in Vandalia, Illinois in 1894. Her rival was another woman. Over half the voters in the election were women who turned out for the first school election in which they could vote. In the 1870s Sonneman's husband William, was a two-term mayor of the city.
