Nettie B. Depp
Nettie B. Depp was elected County Superintendent of Schools for Barren County, Kentucky in 1913.  She was the first woman elected to an office in Barren County.  Depp came from a family of Democratic politicians in Kentucky, but was first considered for nomination in 1909 by the Republicans.  In 1913 she ran as a Democrat.  During her one term as County Superintendent Depp was concerned about the advanced teacher training in the county, the state of small schools in Barren, especially rural schools.  During her tenure a high school was established in the county for the first time.  While Depp did not work for racially desegrated schools, it was clear that she was concerned that African American students, many in migrating share-cropping families, receive an education.  After her political term, Depp returned to teaching and school administration.  She also worked for woman suffrage.
