Ida Parson
Ida Parson was one of three women who were elected School Directors in Nevada City, California in 1883.  They won by more than 60 votes over their male opponents. A newspaper article reporting on the event included the following: "Some men set up the boast that they can beat women at anything.  If those men who were candidates in Nevada City thought thus, they have probably changed their minds."
