Virginia F. Russell was nominated for the office of County Superintendent of Schools in Santa Barbara County, California in 1875.  This was the first year women were eligible to be elected to school offices in the state. She was involved in local temperance politics and encouraged women to speak out in political settings bout the issue.  Virginia Russell, with her husband William, published a local newspaper, the Santa Barbara Index.
