Fisher, Dr. Mary Winter
Dr. Mary Winter was elected Coroner of Archuleta County, Colorado in 1897.  Under her married name, Mary Winter Fisher, she was elected for two additional terms in the office in 1909 and 1911.  Serving as one of the few doctors in a remote area of the state Winter Fisher often traveled by horseback to care for her patients.  Dr. Winter married in 1902 to a local pharmacist.  Together they opened a drugstore, Winter and Fisher.  Dr. Winter Fisher was well regarded by her community and her obituary read in part: "A nobler character never lived in this section, and to say her passing leaves a void that can never be filled is expressing it altogether too mildly. She was the idol of all, and her life will ever be an inspiration to her countless friends. To paraphrase Shakespeare, we can only say; ‘Her life was gentle; and the elements so mixed in her, that nature might stand up and say to all the world, this was a woman!’”
