In 1916 Nellie Slusher, a Democrat, defeated Josephine B. Mays, the Republican candidate, for the office of Teller County Superintendent of Schools. Slusher was a divorced (1912) teacher with two living children. She ran successfully for the office again in 1918. She lived at Cripple Creek. Slusher was born in Illinois in 1864.
