In 1916 Annie Powless, a Republican, campaigned for the office of County Superintendent of Schools for Park County, Colorado. She lost to Marian F. Hill, a Democrat, who served the 1917-1918 term of office. Powless ran again for the office in 1918 and won. She graduated from the University of Colorado in 1913, at the age of forty-six and on the date of her silver wedding anniversary.
