Helen Piotopowaka Clarke, a Republican, was elected County Superintendent of Common Schools for Lewis and Clark County, Montana in 1882. Clarke was probably the first woman of Native American descent to gained elected office in Montana. She served in the office for three terms, and lost her fourth campaign.
