Evangeline Heartz served three times, as member of the Colorado House of Representatives from Denver. She was first elected in 1896 and to serve in the state house from 1897-1898, Heartz was a supporter of labor unions and introduced a bill providing for compulsory arbitration in labor disputes. She won re-election in 1900. Two years later she ran for County Commissioner from the Denver area. While not active with suffragist organizations in CO, Heartz supported women's right to vote. Heartz was Chairman of the Committee on Enrollments, and Member of the Committees on Appropriations and Expenditures, Education, State Institutions, Temperance, and Public Health. Heartz was also the first woman Speaker of the House [CO]. In 1912 Heartz was a Democratic Party candidate for Committeewoman in Precinct 1, District H, in Denver, Colorado in 1912. Heartz ran for the State House in 1916 as a Democrat and was elected once more to a seat in the legislature. She sought re-election two years later.
