Women in Colorado won full suffrage in 1893. In 1894 numerous women ran for state office for the first time. Republican Clara Cressingham was one of the candidates for the Colorado House of Representatives.  She was thirty-two, married with two children. She was elected. Cressingham was originally from Brooklyn, New York. She represented the city of Denver, Arapahoe County. While serving in the legislature, she served as secretary of the Republican House Caucus and drafted legislation on agricultural issues.
