Elizabeth Fordyce was elected by the voters to County Superintendent of Schools for Price County, Wisconsin in 1898. However, the Wisconsin State Supreme Court declared that Fordyce was ineligible to serve in the office because she did not hold the qualifications required by Wisconsin law. The 1898 revised statute in Wisconsin stated that those eligible for the office of County Superintendent of Schools must have either a superintendent's certificate or have taught in Wisconsin public schools for at least eight years. The statute also prohibited placing on the ballot anyone without those qualifications. Fordyce had none of the qualifications required.
