In 1896 Mary E. Metzgar campaigned unsuccessfully for the position of University of Illinois Trustee on the new National Party ticket. She polled only o.o4 percent of the vote (1,458 votes cast). In 1902 Metzgar ran for this office again, but as the candidate of the Prohibition Party. She polled 13,582 vote (o.52 percent of votes cast) and lost.
